Imo state governor Rochas Okorocha has called on leaders to preach peace

The Imo state governor Rochas Okorocha has said that the lack of peace among past leaders and families led to discord among Nigerians.

Speaking at a Christmas service at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Ideato South, Imo state, Okorocha said families fail to preach peace to members and thus the emergence of various agitating groups in the country.

He said: “If peace and love had flown from the families in the country since the nation’s independence there would not have been the Civil War or Boko Haram or IPOB or Niger-Delta Avengers”

The governor further added that the seed of discord which has been sown for so long in the hearts of Nigerians has given birth to agitation by IPOB members, Niger Delta militants and many others.

“It was the seed of discord sown long before now that has given birth to all these agitations on the basis of tribe and religion.”

“I advise that this time around, we should take up a new resolution to say we must be at peace with ourselves and at peace with our neighbours and indeed at peace with others,” Okorocha said.

He also said the negative analysis on various crisis rocking the country will continue to hinder development in Nigeria.

He called on present leaders to continue to embrace and peace within their various capacities.

“This is what is key, as too much of negative analysis, contentions and complains have led us no where.

"We should be able to relate with one another and be our brothers’ keepers not minding tribal or religious differences. This is my message for all, and only then, the progress we are looking for shall come” he said.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has called for peace talks with militants from the Niger Delta.

The president said rather than fight for the control of oil resources in the region, the government will persuade the agitators to dialogue.

He also said measures to manage the agitations will be agreed upon by both parties.
