BREAKING: Thunderstorm destroys Enugu airport


A very heavy thunder storm which occurred at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu in the early hours yesterday and has destroyed some parts of the airport terminal building and pilot lounge and General Aviation Terminal.
A statement signed by Mrs. HenriettaYakubu acting general manager cooperates affairs FAAN said the thunder storm also affected electric power lines to the Airport, FAAN staff secondary and Primary School buildings and private residential buildings.
Yakubu said however that the , management of FAAN took immediate remedial action which allowed flight operations in and out of the Airport adding FAAN was doing its best to restore normalcy. 
According to her there was no loss of life or injury and that flight operations were not affected in the airport.
The Akanu Ibiam International Airport, was approved for international flight operations to and from Atlanta, United States of America; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Johannesburg, South Africa; Mubia, India and Gwuanzuo, after the remodeling of the airport by the Stella Oduah administration.
The airport was closed on February 10, 2010, by the FAAN for the first phase of major renovation and expansion works.
It was re-opened on 16 December 2010, while the second and third phase of the construction was still ongoing to meet the status of international airport.
It was constructed to provide employment opportunities, as well as foreign investment not just for the south east but for the entire country.
It was expected to handle 500,000 passengers each year.
Enugu airport terminals was part of the transformation agenda of the President Jonathan’s administration in making sure that the air transport industry in the country was a hub of socio-economic development and home for foreign investors through its tourist activities.
