In order to ensure strict adherence to the National Health Act by Nigerian health institutions and professionals, The Senate is organising Nigeria’s first medical legal summit to educate stakeholders in the sector.
Briefing the media on Tuesday on the essence of the one day retreat which the Senate is organising in collaboration with First Council Solicitors (Medical consultants), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Senator Olanrewaju Tejuoso, said that the medicolegal summit became crucial as a result of the constant increase in allegations of medical malpractice and negligence claims from public and private hospitals all over the country.
“The summit is necessary due to the high level of non-compliance of the National Health Act. The law stipulates that standard certificates should be issued by the relevant authority to every health institution and professionals in the country, which is renewable every year. The moratorium offered by the past administration of GoodLuck Jonathan which accented to the Act is two years and has since expired. There has been reports of high level of defaults,” Tejouso stated.
He further explained that the medical law summit which advocates adherence to relevant laws to improve the health sector is being organised for chief medical directors(CMDs) of public and private hospitals and heads of professional health associations, adding that the summit is also aimed at positioning the leadership of the Nigerian health system on how to prevent medical malpractice claims and legal liabilities.
The summit with the theme “Creating a medicolegal environment in hospitals in Nigeria; emphasizing on the need for clinical governance and quality care issues in patients’ management“ and which comes up on December 9 2016 at the Yar’ Adua Event Centre, according to the Senator, would be declared open by the President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki
