Before their win against Algeria on Saturday, the Super Eagles team met with Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel and his predecessor, Godswill Akpabio, where Chelsea FC midfielder and captain Mikel Obi presented the former governor with a new jersey. Akpabio posted photos from the meeting along with congratulatory message to the team.
"I congratulate the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles on their uncommon victory over the Fox of Algeria, adjudged by FIFA as the best team in Africa. On the eve of the match along with Governor Udom Emmanuel and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, Senator Obinna Ogba, we had met with the team and assured them of our support and the support of Nigerians for them to qualify for the World Cup. The Captain of the team, John Obi Mikel presented me with the new team jersey. I'm proud of the performance of the Boys, the technical crew and the supporters who thronged the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium to cheer the team. Congratulations Nigeria"
