NUT Urges Akwa Ibom Govt To Implement 2012 Promotion Of Teachers

The Nigeria Union of Teachers, Akwa Ibom State, on Wednesday called on  the Akwa Ibom State Government, to implement promotion of teachers that are retiring from service and also help defray the outstanding leave grants of 2013, 2015 and 2016.

The teachers also asked for the promotion arrears of 2011, 2012 2013, 2014 and 2015 from the state government.

Speaking on Wednesday during the 2016 world teachers’ day in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state, the state Chairman, Etim Ukpong, urged the state government to direct payment of December 2015, January and February 2016 salaries to some teachers who have been cleared as “non ghosts” after due verification.

He also urged the state government to assist in the speedy refund of seven and half per cent contributory pension money, saying the lean economic realities of the time can no longer support government’s sole sponsorship of education.

Other demands by the teachers are: “Training of teachers in ICT and provision of laptops and table top computers to teachers and the schools to boost compliance with 21st century teaching and learning processes in schools and effectively equip candidates for public examinations in line with global best practices.

“Assist schools heads run schools by paying subvention from the outstanding arrears. The teachers also want the state government direct recruitment of teachers to boost teacher learner ratio in schools. The teachers also want the state government to revisit the 2014 absorbed teachers case.”

Ukpong, who identified funding as major challenge to quality education, said funding was central to the success of any venture.

Hear him: ‘It was on the strength of this case that the NUT established a position for parents/guardians partnership with the government in the funding of education.

“The lean economic realities of the time can no longer support government’s sole sponsorship of education. It will help stem the tide of observed and asserted laisez fair attitude of parents, guardians, and the society to education and their wards’ performances in schools and in public examinations.”

Governor, Udom Emmanuel who was represented by his Commissioner for Education, Mr, Aniekan Akpan, urged the teachers to be diligent in their responsibilities.

He said most of the issues raised by the teachers are top priorities of Governor Udom Emmanuel’s administration.
