Case of failed kidnap, say Police
Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Olufemi Bamiro, was reportedly shot in the leg around his Oluyole area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital on Tuesday night by some yet-to-be identified gunmen.
‘New Telegraph’ learnt Wednesday that the former VC was being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the University College Hospital (UCH) where he was rushed to after the shooting.
Bamiro, 69, and a professor of Mechanical Engineering, was the 10th UI VC between 2005 and 2010 before he was succeeded by Prof. Isaac Adewole, now Minister of Health.
Confirming the incident, the school’s Director of Communication, Olatunji Oladejo, said that the institution’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic, Prof Gbemisola Oke, and the Registrar of the school, Olujinmi Olukoya, had visited Bamito at the UCH.
According to him: “I can confirm to you that our former Vice Chancellor, Prof Gbemiro, was shot on Tuesday night. There is no detail of the shooting for now. The school’s DVC, Academic and Registrar have visited him at UCH on behalf of the school. What I can say further is that we are thankful to God that he is responding to treatment. We are in touch with the management of the hospital management whom we trust to offer the best treatment to the former VC.
“He was one of the best VCs of the school and he is known for his dedication and commitment to work. He is a wonderful mobiliser and the school wishes him soonest recovery.”
Reacting, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Mr Adekunle Ajisebutu, later confirmed the incident, saying that it was a case of failed kidnap attempt.
